SIMON Mowbray has been sensationally released by Spalding United.

The striker, signed from Holbeach United in the summer, has fired 18 goals in 30 games for the Tulips this season.

But new Spalding supremo Pat Rayment told the Spalding Guardian that the club’s leading scorer isn’t part of his plans at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

“I think it’s best for everyone that Simon has left,” said Rayment, who worked with Mowbray when number two at Stamford last season. “He’s been asked to find a new club and that’s about it.

“His departure frees up a space for the likes of Tom James and Ryan O’Loughlin, who I like the look of.”

Without Mowbray, the Tulips face a tough home test against St Ives Town on Saturday (3pm).

The fourth-placed Saints haven’t lost since a 2-0 reverse at Holbeach United, a run spanning five games.

After seeing his side play well in defeat at King’s Lynn and then get thumped 4-2 at Kempston, Rayment is hoping for something inbetween this weekend.

Spalding will be boosted by the arrival of left sider Ben Porter, who is set to make his debut after joining from Peterborough Northern Star.

Rayment added: “If King’s Lynn was nine out of ten and Kempston three, perhaps we can get a nice seven out of ten and win 1-0!

“I’ll look to change the shape a bit and it’s also good to have Ben on board. He’s only 20, but has three years’ experience in the UCL and will be a good addition.

“I doubt any more signings will follow him though. It’s an impossible time to get all the players in that I would want.”
