TULIPS: More late agony for Spalding

GLAPWELL 2 (Townsend 85, Varley 90+3) SPALDING UTD 1 (Scott 22)

TWO goals in the last five minutes broke Spalding hearts on Wednesday night.

Player/boss Richard Scott fired the visitors into a deserved 22nd minute lead, rifling home direct from a free-kick.

A depleted Tulips squad missing Ross Miller, Tony Onokah, George Cox and David de Oliveira because of work commitments, fought hard throughout.

Keeper Martyn Margarson was kept busy throughout - and the pick of his saves was a fine reflex stop just before half time.

After the break Spalding twice came close to extending their advantage, but Daniel Westwood spurned a one-on-one chance and Scott saw another free-kick hit the side netting.

As the minutes ticked away the Tulips looked set for a fine win, but they were eventually pegged back by Gary Townsend's header from a corner in the 85th minute.

Worse was to follow too, as Glapwell skipper Matt Varley nodded in the decider three minutes into stoppage time from another set-play.

This is the second time in three Evo-Stik League First Division South games that the Tulips have lost winning positions because of late goals, having wasted a 2-0 lead at Leek Town on the opening day.

Scott's side are yet to register a league win and drop to 18th place in the early standings.

Tulips: Margarson, Scott, Penny, Pawson, Pugh, Oliver, Tidswell, Evans, White, Webb, Westwood. Not used: Freeny and Overton.

Saturday - Tulips v Newcastle Town.
