TRIATHLON: Spalding buoyed by summer event

SPALDING Triathlon Club are looking forward to hosting a gruelling triathlon in the town this summer.

Held at the Castle Sports Complex on June 10, it will comprise of a 400m swim (16 lengths of the pool), a 19km cycle ride and a 5km run.

Cyclists will find themselves travelling flat out to Moulton and back, while the two-lap run will take competitors along Albion Street and West Elloe Avenue, before heading back along Pinchbeck Road to the Castle.

The event will be open for anybody to enter, be it as an individual or as part of a team (one person per discipline).

A total 250 entrants are allowed to take part, at a cost of £35 per entry (plus £5 for a race licence if applicable) and £45 per team (again, plus the £5 licence).

Spalding Tri currently run swim and run turbo classes that will help athletes prepare for the daunting triathlon, as well as core classes.

Parking has already been allocated for the triathlon, while anybody interested in joining the club or helping out with volunteering can visit www.spaldingtri.co.uk for more information.

The inaugural event is the latest slice of good news to come from Spalding Tri, who were recently awarded a Sport England grant of £3,676. They money has been used to help increase the number of coaches at the club, while also allowing current members to increase their qualifications.

• TOM Drew, of Spalding Tri, finished second in his age group and 14th overall at a triathlon in Windsor.

With three distances on offer at Dorney Lakes, he opted to compete in the ‘standard’ event ahead of sprint or super sprint, finishing in 2.24.13hrs.

He completed a 5km run in 21.36mins, a 40km bike in 1.13.09hrs and a 10km run in 47.29mins.

Drew said: “I was generally pleased with the effort. I worked really hard on the bike, which was basically 12 flat laps of one mile strong back wind and one mile strong head wind.”
