TRIATHLON: Top effort from Spalding’s Aimee

Spalding Triathlon Club’s Aimee Stocker managed a respectable 70th place at the Olympic Distance Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

Athletes from more than 40 countries around the world competed in the event, with 2,500 taking part. Stocker qualified at the Dambuster Triathlon at Rutland Water back in June.

The event consisted of a 1,500m sea swim, a 40km cycle ride and a 10km run – and with 90 athletes competing in her female 30-34 group, competition was always going to be tough.

With conditions at the sea leg rough, Stocker was very tired after her weakest discipline, but pleased to jump onto her trusty bike.

The leg was very challenging, with some tough climbs combined with flat stretches along the coast which were subject to high winds. However, the Spalding Tri ace made up plenty of ground on her favoured leg and passed a number of rivals.

With the Southern Hemisphere athletes, who are at the start of their respective seasons, coming into their own in the final run, Stocker slipped back a bit – but was still pleased with 70th.
