TIGERS: OJ new captain after shunning Deeping move

OMAR Joof has been named the new club captain of Holbeach United.

The combative midfielder replaces veteran Dean Elston in the role, with the ex-skipper concentrating more on his position as assistant manager.

Tigers player/boss Shaun Keeble insists that the Gambian's appointment is richly deserved, after proving his loyalty to the club this summer.

Keeble said: "We felt appointing Omar was the right way for us to go.

"He's been with us for a long time, and is fully committed to our cause.

"It's important to reward players, and myself, Phil Barnes and Dean felt he was the best candidate for the role.

"He can't wait to get started."

The Holbeach supremo also revealed that Joof has snubbed a move to UCL Premier Division rivals Deeping Rangers this summer.

Managed by former Tigers duo Pat Rayment and Danny Hussey, the Deeping approach didn't come as a shock to Keeble.

He added: "OJ's a top player at this level and we're delighted to hang onto him.

"I'm not surprised Deeping wanted him, but his decision to stay is very loyal and we all appreciate that."

Joof's new role does not spell the end for Tigers legend Elston, who is still keen on playing next season.

He will be returning to training with the rest of the squad on Saturday, with up to eight fresh faces also expected.

Keeble continued: "Dean will be focusing a little more on his job assistant, but is by no means out of my plans.

"He'll take a bit more of a back seat at times and will be helping me out on the sideline.

"If there is anybody performing better than him in training he'd be the first to say so."

Keeble has spoken to all of last seasons' squad, and is hopeful that they will all remain with the Tigers as pre-season gets under way.

Holbeach are still waiting on an answer from Coca Cola Championship side Peterborough United, with regard to a high-profile clash.

But Boston United have pulled out of their date with the Tigers, leaving some other fixtures up in the air.

Still, Holbeach kick-off their friendlies by taking on Peterborough Premier Division side Pinchbeck United at Carter's Park on July 16 (7.30pm).

Next up is a trip to Skegness Town two days later (3pm), before hosting King's Lynn on July 22 (7.30pm).

The date of a home clash with Wyberton is still to be confirmed, while a fixture with Tuncay Korkmaz's Stamford has also been mooted.

Anybody interested in training with the Tigers can join them at George Farmer Technology College pitch on Saturday (11am).
