TABLE TENNIS: Shock start for South Holland

SPALDING AND DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE (sponsored by Magellan Solutions Ltd): PERENNIAL high-fliers South Holland find themselves bottom of Division One after slipping to a second successive loss last week.

Champions last season, Holland are in unfamiliar territory at the wrong end of the standings.

Overall it was a quieter week, at least in terms of fixtures across the league, with just four other matches played. But the other tables were kept occupied with practice and visitors.

Second division outfit Barry White’s Babes played two matches on tables three and four.

On three they caught up on their postponed fixture with No Name from week two, while on the other they brought forward a match with Moulton Butchers.

In both matches the singles were shared, but the Babes took them on the doubles.

Matt Childs scored a double for No Name, as did Nicola Wilkinson for Butchers.

However, Jonathan Black and Arron Chappell took one each and teamed up for the doubles against No Name.

Chappell also took a point off Butchers, along with Rod Bain, and they won the doubles too.

Babes move up three places to equal third on six points but have played a game more.

Meanwhile, round two of the Moulton Shield had drawn Defenders against JAG, an early return for the league match played the week before.

With both sides changing a player the result was reversed, though not without some tight matches.

Defenders took the first game in three – using the old rules best of three ends to 21 – but JAG fought back to take the next three for the tie.

Bladerunners also continued their fine form from round one and defeated Lone Sharks 5-0.

Only the first game threatened Dave Gibson and Pete Budd, with the rest won in straight ends.

In the semi-finals JAG face the winners of Chunky and Chunkier versus Seriously Adrift, while Bladerunners meet South Holland or Insidious.
