TABLE TENNIS: Comeback kids Duffill and Hammond take first crown
Spalding & District Table Tennis League (Sponsored by Magellan Solutions Ltd): RICHARD Hammond and Stewart Duffill landed the first silverware in the season as they came back to clinch the Val Mackey Doubles title.
Final opponents Rod Bain and Allan Lewis, who boast a combined age in excess of 140, started superbly and took the first end, before storming ahead in the second.
However, Hammond and Duffill fought back to level and then, with a change of tactics, took the third and fourth ends and the crown.
Back in the league, South Holland made a significant surge in Division One, playing and winning two matches.
They administered a first defeat on rivals JDM Allsorts 4-1, a result that says nothing about how close the games were.
The singles took 17 ends, with an individual 100 per cent record going in the process.
At the same time, John Gilbert and Hammond doubled up on the next table against Hit n Hope, a match brought forward from January.
Holland went on better to win 5-0, with the clean sweep taking them within two of the top – although only moving them up one place to fourth.
Despite their defeat, JDM move up to first.
Hit n Hope had a bad night, as they slumped to a second 5-0 loss in their other match against Lone Sharks. Father and son pairing Keith and Adam Davey took their first win, although only one game finished in regulation.
The other top-flight match had Bladerunners keeping in the mix with a 4-1 win over JAG.
Pete Budd took a double in a fixture that went true to form.
In Division Two, the gap at the top stayed the same after leaders Seriously Adrift and rivals Chunky and Chunkier both won well.
The former kept their grip on things with a 5-0 demolition of Ha’st for the loss of just one end, Richard Matthews and Reece Kerry both getting doubles.
Chunky saw off Moulton Butchers 4-1, Dave Coley getting two, while Nicola Wilkinson scored for Butchers.
Insidious won by the same score against bottom team No Name to keep the gap to six.
Clive Shardlow doubled up with Matt Childs, showing fine form again, getting the consolation for the losers.
Meanwhile, Castle Sports recorded a fifth 4–1 score of the night in defeating Barry Whites Babes, and move up a place to fourth.
Joe Bombardini kept up his good run with two points. Bain scored for the Babes.
Despite the game results, Babes scored only three points less in the singles.
