TABLE TENNIS: Bittersweet South Holland win

SPALDING & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE (Sponsored by Magellan Solutions Ltd): SOUTH Holland went clear at the top of Division One in the top flight’s only game – though probably by less than they would have wished.

Of the eight matches scheduled one had already been played, and two were postponed. Two of those, in what is becoming a habit, were partially played with the other games to be played sometime in the future.

Bladerunners’ Pete Budd began and ended the match with wins, while Holland’s John Gilbert and Richard Hammond had to be satisfied with taking their other singles and the doubles for a 3–2 victory.

Consequently, Holland are now three clear, but one of their rivals is just six behind with two games in hand.

In Division Two, second-placed Chunky and Chunkier gained ground thanks to a 3–2 win in a previously postponed match with Insidious, who are third.

With the two teams involved in three matches, it got complicated. However, C and C’s Dave Coley and Paddy Palgrave got off to a good start with two wins.

The reverse singles were shared, before Insidious rounded off the scoring with the doubles.

At the same time, Insidious were going down by the same score in their other match against Castle Sports.

The first pair of singles were shared, but Castle took the lead in the doubles – which they consolidated by sharing the other singles games. Castle Sports’ Joe Bombardini continued his fine form on his return to the league with another pair of wins.

Chunky and Chunkier are now just two points behind the leaders, while Insidious remain third by the same amount from Castle.

Castle’s Bombardini had already won a game earlier when he completed their match with Ha’st for a 4–1 victory, but they still have a match in hand on their rivals.

Between playing Insidious, Chunky began their match with Barry Whites Babes.

With Babes fielding one player, they are two up with three to play.

Ha’st also fielded one player in their fixture with No Name and are two down with three to play.

Next week sees round two of the Marylands Cup, but with only four matches it is to be hoped some catching up can take place.
