TABLE TENNIS: Battling for Bowl

A MANIC night of Roy Gibson Memorial Rose Bowl action saw Spalding and District League players battle out over 100 games.

An impressive tally of 32 players turned out and they were divided into four groups of this handicap event.

Top player Chris Tzitzikas started all his matches on zero - or even minus points - while at the other end of the scale handicaps had to be brought down to 25, writes Allan Lewis.

Each group played 28 games over best of three ends to 31 points. Because of the number of games it was a cracking night of action, with nearly 250 ends contested.

And such a busy night ensured that the top two qualifiers in each pool - who will progress to the knock-out stage - are all but decided.

In group one, Dave Coley (27), Will Coley (25) and Clive Shardlow (28) dominated proceedings winning over half the games played.

Shardlow and Will Coley each took six to go through, with the former claiming top spot thanks to his win in their match.

Dave Coley just missed out on five.

Group two was much tighter, though Nicola Wilkinson (25) went through in first place on six.

Matthew Childs (31), in his first season, scored five as did Nick Martin (27), while Mark Willows (6) has four with one game left.

Unfortunately for Willows, even a win would not be enough as the tie breaker between the three sees Martin going through - having beaten the other two.

In group three there were four players with single figure handicaps.

Action was was spread over three tables, but they still couldn't come to a definite conclusion.

However, Christian Green (28) proved too strong for the rest and went through undefeated.

Second spot is between Garry Wilkinson (20) and Paddy Palgrave (27) - who has one game to play. If Palgrave wins he will go through on count back.

Group four finished in quick time, but three players came out clear of the others.

Two newcomers, Chris Sloan (30) and Baber Khan (28), tied on six with the former getting the nod.

Gary Simpson (27) just missed out on five.

In the knock-out quarter finals, Shardlow faces team-mate Martin and Green meets Khan. The winners of these two ties will meet in the last four. Meanwhile, Sloan plays Garry Wilkinson or Palgrave, for the right to face the winner of the Nicola Wilkinson and Coley clash.
