TABLE TENNIS: Eight make Gibson progress

The last eight were decided as Spalding and District table Tennis League’s annual Roy Gibson Memorial Rose Bowl took place last week.

The handicap event saw the 21 entries divided into four groups, so that each had a range of handicaps from 1 to 25. Ties were the best of three ends to 31 , with the top two going through.

With Phil Chandler (6) on 3 points already through, Group One came down to the last match to determine the other qualifier. Allan Lewis (19) faced Nicola Wilkinson (19) with the winner continuing and the loser out. The former prevailed and headed the group with four points.

Group Two was very much a family affair, with all three members of the Gilbert clan in the group – and Reece Kerry and Dave Gibson making up the numbers. With one of the three bound to be disappointed, Kerry (20) spoilt the party by qualifying on three wins while the lowest ranked of the family, Hannah (25), also scored three but had to settle for second.

James Gibson (14), whose game has moved up a notch this season, showed that with four wins to head Group Three. Second place went to Colin Vertigan (7), who won his other three games.

Favourite Tomascz Dobrzyn headed Group Four, which had six players, with five wins in straight ends – though he needed two deuce games to defeat the highest handicap. The rest of the group were much closer matched because second qualifier Jean White (7) went through with three wins.

QF draw: (1) Lewis v White; (2) Kerry v Vertigan; (3) Gibson v Gilbert; (4) Dobrzyn v Chandler. Winners of matches 1 and 2 meet in the semi, as do 3 and 4.
