SWIMMING: Hannam is among the best of British

Bright future: Chloe Hannam

Bright future: Chloe Hannam

SPALDING swimming sensation Chloe Hannam has earned the chance to be selected by Team GB.

The South Lincs Competitive Swimming Club starlet roared to a pair of British championship times at the ASA zonal championships.

She will now compete at the British Gas Swimming Championships, held at the purpose-built London Aquatic Olympic Centre next month – rubbing shoulders with the nation’s elite competitors.

Hannam gained the 15-year-old 200m backstroke qualification time and went six seconds under 400m IM benchmark.

She will compete at the Olympic pool on Saturday, March 3 and again on the following Thursday (March 8).

Although qualifying for the Great Britain squad is a very tall order – Hannah Miley swims the 400m IM some 24 seconds faster than Hannam – it will be a great experience for South Lincs’ finest.

But with great opportunity comes huge expense, with Hannam’s family expecting to be hit hard in the pocket by the event.

High travel and accommodation costs are tempered further by hefty entry fees, which threaten to hinder here participation in the high-profile meeting.

Hannam has also been travelling to train with City of Peterborough Swimming Club three times a week.

Anybody that would like to sponsor or help out with the teen ace’s development is being urged to get in touch with her team.

Suzanne Cawley, an active fundraiser for Hannam, said: “Achieving a British Championship qualifying time is such an achievement for Chloe.

“The experience of swimming at a competition where all the top GB swimmers will be fighting amongst themselves for a place on the team will be one that she will never forget.

“She is fast enough to earn her place at this competition and deserves the support from local people as well as her family and friends.”
