SPALDING RFC: Sharman rues points difference

Friday, 9am - SPALDING RFC will have a well-earned break this weekend after hauling themselves back into the promotion picture.

Harry Sharman's side sit second in the Midlands Two East (North) standings - a position that would be good enough to book a third-successive promotion play-off.

Town still have an outside chance of taking the title, but third-placed Market Rasen will leap back into the runners-up spot if they win their game in hand, by virtue of their superior points difference.

And Sharman insists that his side still have it all to do in the race for second.

He said: "I'm fairly confident that we'll finish the season strongly.

"But Rasen have the advantage on points difference and that has always looked likely to be a key come the end of the season.

"We've let ourselves down by not converting our domination into points on a number of occasions this season and it could cost us."

With Town 151 behind Rasen in the points difference stakes, they will almost certainly need to better their overall points return to secure second.

Their form has been excellent, winning four on the spin since a defeat to leaders Coalville.

But despite their crushing 58-8 win over Sleaford last Saturday, the Spalding skipper was left unhappy with his team - and said the game was typical of their season.

Sharman added: "We should be beating Sleaford by more than 50 points.

"I felt there was at least 30 more points there for the taking, but that's been the story of our campaign.

"We had a poor start and have failed to punish the lesser sides, which could ultimately cost us dear."

Town's next league fixture is a home clash with West Bridgford on March 27.

But they hope to arrange a friendly the week before.
