SNOOKER:Bourne celebrate a dream debut double

Friday, 9am - BOURNE Snooker Centre capped their successful debut season by taking two of the top titles at Spalding and District League's finals weekend.

The newly-formed side roared to victory in the Norey Cup, while star player Jason Bates put in a masterful performance to take the snooker scratch gong for the sixth time in his career.

Held over three days at Springfields Events Centre, 12 high-class snooker and billiards games made for a superb weekend of action.

Matches got under way last Friday as Crowland A delivered a devastating display in the Billiards Shield final.

Alan Readshaw (R100), Andy Wheatley (R30) and Neil Burton (R100) all won to make it a Crowland clean-sweep against Whittlesey, for whom Terry Everitt snared a consolation break of 28.

There was more billiards action on Saturday morning, as Pyramid's Ian Clare (R100) saw off Gosberton's Lee Watson (R60) 200-164 in the handicap final.

In the first of the snooker finals, John Willis (scr) was crowned senior master. The Whittlesey veteran had too much for Pyramid's Brian Kendall (O14), winning the opening two frames 64-28, 74-32 to clinch the title.

Spalding side Tulips took the honours in the mixed pairs - having started with a 44 handicap cushion.

Played over two continuousss frames, Karen Howlett (R21) and Mark Howlett (scr) defeated Donington duo Jean Thompson (R28) and Neil Reynolds (O42) 124-100.

The prestigious KO Cup was next, with two of the lower tier high-flyers going head to head.

Division Three title hopefuls BSC F eventually edged what proved a titanic tussle, as they dispatched Bourne SC A 3-2. The pivotal wins came from Tom Turner (R7), Pete Holland (scr) and Oliver Turner (O7).

Possibly the most anticipated showdown of the weekend followed, with Bourne ace Bates squaring off with Tulips maestro Bren Bowman in the scratch.

Bates took the title 4-1, making breaks of 50, 46, 45 and 39 in the process. Bowman replied with an offering of 49.

There was a familiar name on the Billiards Scratch trophy, which was the first silverware handed out on Sunday.

BSC star Hugh Pinner took his 11th career title - but his first since 1985 - by knocking off Consti's Mick Johnson 345-151. The veteran plundered breaks of 63, 37 and 31 before finishing the 90-minute final with a fine 46.

Two former winners clashed in the ladies snooker final, as 2003 champion Rachel Mayfield did battle with Tanya Peel. And it was Tulips' Peel (R14) who retained her crown, coming from behind to edge out Hillside's Mayfield 2-1.

The junior title went to Mike Knight from Services, who fended off Charlie Sutton from Q@Southside 2-0.

Gosberton made a hefty handicap count in the snooker pairs, as they cruised past Tulips 166-105.Andy Billings (R21) and Lee Watson brought home the title, with Jack Chilvers (O14) and Chris Harvey (O7) the unlucky team.

In the snooker handicap, Jamie Beeken (R7) squeezed past BSC man Mark Woodberry (O28).

The Norey Cup completed the schedule, as Bourne SC crushed Pyramid D 4-0. Jason Needham and the irrepressible Bates both made breaks of 44 for the winners.
