MOTORSPORT: Cracking Cadwell show has Wilson up to fourth
BEN Wilson moved up to fourth in the British Supersport championship standings with a fine third place at Cadwell Park on Monday.
It could have been even better for the Kirton racer, who had just taken second place when the race was red flagged a lap early.
Through no fault of his own, a result was declared on positions reached on lap 14 - meaning the Gearlink Kawasaki rider was placed third and not second.
"The bike ran well and the tyre held out, we had a good race although it was a bit disappointing to have the race stopped," said Wilson.
"But I still got on the podium and we moved up to fourth in the championship.
"We are only three points behind Gowland who holds third in the championship so there is everything to race for at Croft next time out. Hopefully we can bag another good result and that will take us back up into the top three."
With only three to a row instead of the usual four, Wilson found himself starting the race from the head of row two - but his usual lightning start saw him nip ahead of series leader and pole setter Sam Lowes to take the lead on the run to Coppice.
His lead was short-lived as Lowes passed him at Park corner and he was demoted to third when Billy McConnell made a desperate dive at the chicane which nearly resulted in Wilson being pushed off the track.
But although he lost momentum, he recovered well and continued on his way in third place.
On lap four McConnell crashed out of the race gifting second place back to Wilson, but he was under immense pressure from the following pack who challenged for position at every opportunity.
Wilson hung on in there and although he was temporarily demoted to fourth on lap 12 he clawed his way back past multi TT winner Ian Hutchinson and hunted down James Westmoreland, who by this time had moved into second place.
Wilson was not to be denied and on the penultimate lap he regained second place at the hairpin and looked to be in a comfortable position to take the runner-up spot.
However, just before they crossed the line to start the final lap the race was red-flagged for an incident further down field and Wilson was handed a third-placed finish.
With his points tally increased to 100, Wilson is just three points away from the top three but McConnell is only a point behind him so a top result at Croft on September 12 is essential.
Wilson was third in last year's race at the North Yorkshire circuit and will be striving for another good result in two week's time.
