MARTIAL ARTS: Get taste of new Muay Thai class

A NEW Muay Thai class is being run in Spalding – with locals urged to give it a try.

‘Jein Muay Thai’ are running sessions at Spalding High School every Monday night (8pm-9pm), with plenty of places available.

The classes are held by Jein Syman-Gilbert, who is a former ladies’ amateur world cup winner in the ancient martial art of Muay Thai, otherwise known as Thai boxing.

The history of the sport goes back over 1,000 years, when it was taught to the soldiers of the Siamese army as a means of defending themselves if they were disarmed in battle.

It is an extension of kickboxing, but as well as fists and feet, includes elbows and knees.

Syman-Gilbert is qualified as a boxing tutor with the Amateur Boxing Association of England, and is the only local Muay Thai coach registered with the UK Muay Thai Federation.

She is looking for talented people who, with time, may compete in national and international championships – and maybe even represent the UK worldwide.

Alternatively, those that want to try something different are more than welcome

Muay Thai is an excellent form of exercise, which can help build muscle tone, strength, flexibility and agility as well as giving you a useful self-defence skill.

For further information contact Jein via email at jein@btinternet.com, or call 07704 876442 or 01775 719736.
