LOCAL FOOTBALL: Gordon treble just the tonic for Town

Boston & District League

WESTSIDE RANGERS 2

SPALDING TOWN 6

MARTIN Gordon smashed an opening day hat-trick to give Town the perfect start to their Division One season.

Spalding got off to a slow start as the hosts raced into an early lead through Gavin Bell.

Gordon levelled the scores by half time as Dave Ball nodded into the path of Gordon, who buried his chance.

Amazingly, Michael Langley restored Rangers' lead direct from a corner - leaving keeper Brendan Taylor red-faced.

But with Town playing some fast-flowing football, Gordon swept home a second equaliser - and from then on his side never looked back.

The points looked safe when Jimmy Walker helped himself to two goals and it was all over when Gordon raced onto Taylor's long kick to complete his treble.

There was still time for Ball to get in on the act late on to make it 6-2.

WAINFLEET United beat Spalding Harriers 1-0 in the same division.

TYDD ST MARY 0

MAREHAM LE FEN 1

TYDD were left disappointed after slumping to a home loss on day one.

With a completely fresh squad this season under new manager Mark Greenacre, the Saints had high hopes of making a good start in Division Two.

They started well but it was Mareham that took the lead after just seven minutes.

A long throw was flicked on in the penalty box and then nodded home to make it 1-0.

Tydd responded and looked dangerous going forward with man-of-the-match Adam Pack doing well down the left and Mark Garner going close.

The Mareham keeper was in fine form and frustrated Tydd on no less than five occasions during the match, with outstanding saves denying Garner, Pack and Stephen Cousins to name but a few.

Boss Greenacre said: "It was disappointing to lose our first game of the season but the performance we put in today was encouraging with lots of possession.

"We just have to be more clinical in front of goal."

POINTON RESERVES 6

SPALDING TOWN RES 4

TOWN'S second string hit four goals in this early season thriller - but still finished on the losing side.

Ryan Wheeler (2), Tom Cherry and Tom Elderkin were all on target for The Spalding side but Pointon were even more clinical at the other end with six goals of their own to take the three Division Two points.KIRTON Town Reserves and Spalding Harriers Reserves battled out a goalless draw at Graves Park in Division Three.
