INDOOR BOWLS: Spalding ladies charge into last four of Mason Trophy

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s on-song ladies are through to the national semi finals of the over-60s double rink Mason Trophy competition.

They secured their place in the last four courtesy of a 43 shots to 29 win against Redcar in a match played at the neutral venue of Doncaster on January 16.

Spalding soon settled and played very well throughout, to the delight of their travelling supporters.

Sylvia Wade’s rink of Irene Blackman, Betty Deatonand Margaret Dark led the way to record a 22-14 win.

Not to be outdone, Val Bowker, Gill Needham, Barbara Hurst and skip Gloria Haney also won 21-15.

The semi final will be played at Northampton on February 13 (6pm).

The club would like to thank all the supporters who travelled to support the team and wish the players good luck in the next round.

• Spalding A were emphatic winners in their latest Lincs League Division One fixture – and now sit top of the league with two games in hand over their nearest rivals.

They were convincing victors over Scunthorpe in a match played at the Castle Sports Complex.

Leading the way for the hosts were Michael Cole, David Amess, Martin Spencer and Simon Lilley who won by a massive 40-8.

Also on fire was John Needham’s set, who beat the Scunthorpe captain by 29-7.

There was a victory for Maurice Elding too, as he recorded a 25-17 victory.M Simpson and P Simpson also recorded narrow successes.

That gave Spalding a huge winning margin of 140 shots to 71, which secured maximum 18 points .

• Spalding’s friendly side were edged out as they travelled to Long Sutton for their latest fixture against Fenland Bowlers.

It was a very close game from the outset, with the lead changing several times before Spalding narrowly lost out by 97 shots to 95. They did register two winning rinks out of the six, with the best of them coming from Doreen Groves, Ron Townsend and skip Mick Jennings. Captain of the day was Alan Pitts.

• The friendly bowlers did beat Perkins Retired 165-56 in their annual clash, though.

Chris Williamson, Margo Herbert, Mick Jennings and skip James Newby (36-8) delivered the best rink, with Roger Perkins captain for the day.
