INDOOR BOWLS: Final heartache spurs on Spalding

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s under 25 side have progressed in the national double rink competition as they bid to go one better than last year.

Spalding, who lost in last year’s final by a single shot, beat rivals Alfreton by one shot.
Junior international Martin Spencer played at Spalding against England team-mate Ashley Clipston, while Calvin Leuty travelled to Alfreton. Leuty led his rink to a narrow 21-17, defeat while Spencer skipped his set to a hard-fought 16-11 victory to book a clash with Erewash.

• Spalding’s friendly side were soundly beaten 139-113 by Grantham.
Best winning rink for Spalding was D Wiltshire, G Haydon, N Smith and skip A Pitts.

• The over-60s side went down 119-79 (16-2 on points) at Scunthorpe.
Best winning rink was D Marriott, D Groves, D Amess and R Briars.

• Spalding’s ladies picked up a 103-100 win at Scunthorpe. Gloria Haney skipped her rink of Val Bowker, Maxine Coleman and Barbara Hurst to a 28-17 win. The team adjusted to the carpet well, earning themselves 11 points.

Spalding men’s B team were beaten 131-78 at Sleaford A. Keith Woods, Derek Groves, John Bailey and Chris Stagles managed a draw.
