HOCKEY ROUND-UP: Hales hat-trick not enough for Sutton

PELICANS 1st 4 LONG SUTTON 1st 3

MUCH-IMPROVED Sutton were edged out in this Premier B thriller.

The visitors started with a greater intensity than they have shown in recent weeks and Gary Hales opened the scoring with the deftest of finishes from a Nick Ellis cross.

Pelicans came back with two quick goals but Sutton levelled with Hales calmly finishing after good work from Will Dean. Sutton went in behind at the break though, after a smart corner routine.

The second half opened with Sutton again playing good passing hockey, allowing Hales to complete a high-quality hat-trick.

But Pelicans grabbed a fourth goal on the break.

CITY OF PETERBOROUGH 5th 3

SPALDING 1st 7

PROMOTED Spalding moved to within one victory of the 3NW title by thrashing Peterborough.

The home side took the lead twice in the first 20 minutes, only for Pete Wright to equalise on both occasions - before Martin Perkins made it 3-2 at the break.

Peterborough levelled after the break but Mike Morris' goal on the break restored the Spalding lead.

This seemed to calm Spalding down and Glenn Perkins notched to make the game safe.

Morris and Glenn Perkins then added a further goal apiece to wrap it up.

SPALDING 5th 5

ALFORD 2nd 1

LIAM Gavaghan buried a hat-trick as Spalding shrugged off a sluggish start.

It was 1-1 at the break after Gavaghan's poked opener was cancelled out by Alford.

The second half was a different game as Spalding dominated, adding further goals from Lewis Ratcliff, Oliver Lea and Gavaghan (2).

CITY OF PETERBOROUGH 2nd 1

SPALDING LADIES 1st 2

POACHERS continued their winning ways in Peterborough.

Against the run of play in the first half City scored a weak goal, but Spalding instantly responded when Jaqui Hunter found player-of-the-match Kelly Slater, whose well-executed strike enabled them to equalise.

The second half saw Poachers dominate and their hard work paid of when skipper Roz Dennis hit the winner.

CAMBRIDGE CITY 2nd 3

LONG SUTTON LADIES 1st 0

EVEN the heroics of keeper Lorraine Wallis couldn't save Sutton.

City scored early on from a break. Sutton replied with some good passing play but struggled to finish off once they got into the attacking D.

They also had a number of short corners but failed to capitalise. Cambridge then finished the game with two quick goals.

LONG SUTTON LADIES 2nd 2

LINCOLN LADIES 2nd 1

TWO excellent strikes from Kate Ireland sealed the points for Sutton.

In a competitive match, Sutton went down to ten shortly after the break, due to an injury.

Lincoln pressed their advantage and pulled one back - and only excellent work from keeper Rhian Goodge kept them at bay.

SPALDING LADIES 2nd 1

HORNCASTLE 5

THE Poachers were out-muscled by an older and quicker Horncastle side.

A brilliant goal from player-of-the-match Amber Wild restored some pride.
