HOCKEY: Monthly award for prolific Pete

PROLIFIC Peter Gray has picked up the junior player of the month award at Spalding Hockey Club.

The 12-year-old, a pupil at Spalding Grammar School, has made considerable progress this season with his pace and determination being his strongest assets.

Gray is a fine goal scorer and is expected to be a great asset for the Spalding's junior teams in their spring tournaments.

Local retailer D&M Sports sponsor the monthly award as part of their package with the club.

The winner, who receives a shield and a voucher, is chosen by Spalding's coaches.

Gray's rise is just one of the many positives at the club.

Since their move to the new all-weather pitch at Glen Park in Surfleet, Spalding have enjoyed a massive surge in membership by players of all ages.

Junior coaching sessions for boys and girls aged from five to 14 are held on Saturday mornings (9.30-11am).

In addition, the juniors have the chance to participate in friendly matches, as well as Lincolnshire and National competitions - with the Spalding entering teams at all ages from under-ten to under-16.

The club's under-ten boys will represent Lincolnshire in the East Round in March.

LONG SUTTON 3rd 2

SPALDING 4th 1

KEEPER Albert Slater starred as Sutton upset their rivals.

Sutton had a great start to the game with many chances falling to their forwards.

They maintained possession and soon opened the scoring with a well-struck short corner from Jake Read.

Spalding soon replied with a fortunate equaliser to make the score 1-1.

But Sutton played well as a team and showed great skill down the wings from Andy Shore and Michael Donaghy.

The decisive goal soon arrived, Read once again on hand to fire another precise effort home.

However, Slater was Sutton's hero, making some very impressive saves throughout the game.
