GOLF: Ladies up to scratch to take county crown

SPALDING Golf Club's ladies have been crowned county scratch team champions.

The terrific trio of Frances Dalton, skipper Elaine Hancock and Dianne Platt clinched the crown by seeing off Lincoln GC 2-1.

Playing some superb golf, Dalton took her clash 3&2, while Hancock came through 2up.

Platt was narrowly edged out 2&1, but it mattered little.

Other team members that turned out for the team throughout the year were Pat West, Angela Roper, Liz Holbrook and Paula Brown.

Two very good scores were returned in the September Sunday Medal.

Jo Wade had her handicap reduced by three to 17 after winning the silver division with a nett 67.

In windy, overcast conditions, Carol Thomas won the bronze category and qualified for the gold medal with a nett 68.

As a result, Thomas receives a handicap reduction to 24.

Windy, cool conditions prevailed once again on Ladies Invitation Day.

The winners of the 3/4 handicap better ball competition were Elaine MaCleman and her partner with 42 points.

Di Sanderson and her partner came home second with 40 points, with Della Walker and partner third on countback with 39 points from Lynda Double and partner.

Nearest to the pin on the ninth was Norma Parker (two foot three inches).

Sue Watson, Norma Parker, Ruth Atkins, Elaine Hancock and Claire Rylott (Boston) all won balls in the two's competition.

Men's section: The second monthly medal competition in as many weeks was played last week.

Phil Packard won the lower handicap division carding a nett 68 (73-5=68), two strokes clear of Stephen Camm (78-8=70), with David Inglis in third place (80-9=71).

Completing the leaderboard in this category, all shooting a nett 72, were Robert Kedzlie, James Crampton, Mark Mitchell and Ian Long.

In the higher handicap, category John Thorpe came out on top with a nett 66 (90-24=66).

Mick Tatam took second spot with his nett 70 (87-17=70), with Chris Flynn third on countback from Roy Peel and Gerald Cox, after all carded a nett 71.

Completing the leaderboard in this category, all with a nett 73 were Rod Filby, Geoff Gargett and Peter Wade.

James Crampton won the lowest gross score prize with a two under par 70.

Buckingham Cup (betterball stableford): Result – 1st David Perrott & Vic Davis 43pts; 2nd Ray Harrison & Martin Paddison 42pts (ocb); 3rd Jason Houghton & Doug Garfoot 42pts. All on 41pts – Barry Simmonite & John Crampton; Paul Edgley & Colin Gildon; Mark Morrison & Mark Jones; Phil Packard & Steve Pell and Martin North & Andy Bingham.

The mixed team returned to winning ways by beating Sleaford GC 5-3.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Peter Gooderson and Millie Thorold (4&3), Geoff Skinner and Ann Tasker (5&4), David Tasker and Mags McArdle (3&1) and Frank Bell and Norma Parker (2up).

Rob Sampson and Olive Gooderson, and David Parker and Jenny Wilson both halved their games.

Tydd St Giles GC

TYDD'S senior section's NAAFI tournament has raised 403 for the help the heroes charity.

Four teams of 11 representing the army, navy, RAF and civilians battled out the team stableford competition.

Captained by Tony Smith, the RAF took the trophy for the second year running with 44 points, followed by the Army (35.5pts) and the navy (24.5pts). The civilians came in last with 17 points.
