GOLF: Heavy defeat for Spalding in county foursomes final
Spalding Golf Club men lost in the final of the county foursomes.
They were beaten 7 down by Holme Hall, Scunthorpe, at Elsham GC, Brigg.
In the morning semi-finals, Spalding beat Carholme 3up.
Both Mark Mitchell and Daniel Hines, and Steve Wade and Andy Grimwood lost their games 1 down.
But Gary Palmer and Richard Laud won 5up to give Spalding a combined 3up score to set up a final in the afternoon against Holme Hall GC, who beat Sleaford GC 3 up in their semi-final.
In the final, first out Mitchell and Hines lost 3 down and the stars of the morning round, Palmer and Laud, suffered a 6 down deficit.
Wade and Grimwood pulled the score back to 7 down by winning their game 2 up, but it wasn't enough.
Holme Hall were worthy winners but the match was only won and lost on the greens with Spalding just not able to convert their putts.
Although a disappointing result for the loyal band of supporters, they came home proud of the efforts of both the players and their caddies.
Sleaford beat Carholme 1up in the third/fourth place play off.
The 16-28 handicap rabbits open day was well attended with more than 70 golfers representing clubs from all over the county and beyond.
Perfect weather conditions helped Rabbits captain Keith Moore, vice-captain Keith Williams and their band of volunteers have a very successful day.
The morning medal round was won by home club player Geoff Gargett (nett 68) with Boston West pair Neil Hutson and Nigel Robinson second and third.
Spalding's Rob Sampson and Ben Jackson completed the leaderboard fourth and fifth respectively.
