GOLF: Gedney Hill miss out after drama of two extra holes
GEDNEY Hill Golf Club found a talented Canwick Park side a step too far in the Mail on Sunday Golf Classic.
They went out in round five after an extremely hard-fought match, with the teams needing two extra holes to be separated.
After five matches the pair were locked together on 2.5 points each.
Ian Weller and skipper David Lord grabbed wins for Gedney Hill, winning 7&5 and 2up respectively.
The half came from Jim Starbuck, while Nigel Baines (2&1) and Colin Rust (1down) were narrowly beaten.
With the opening extra hole halved, Gedney Hill unfortunately lost on the par five second additional hole.
The fantastic foursome of Andy Davies, Chris Davies, Nikki Weller and Ian Weller won the 2009 Gedney Hill AM-AM.
They racked up 109 points to see off 22 other teams, with Jim Starbuck, Teresa Starbuck, Colin Rust and Jackie Rust four points back in second.
Dick Clift, Tony Burgess, Simon Webster and David Reynolds completed the top three on 104 points.

If Spalding Golf Club member Tom Reedman was disappointed at losing the Course Stewards Cup final to his father Carl recently, he certainly made up for it by winning the much coveted Presidents Putter competition with a superb nett 64.
He won the individual strokeplay event by two shots from a field of over 140 entries and his 73-9=64 also earned him a handicap reduction from nine to seven.
The next three places could only be separated on countback, with Stephen Baxendale (82-16=66), Johnny Walker (85-19=66) and Vic Davis (79-13=66) all carding a nett 66.
Keith Hearne came fourth (70-3=67) with his 70 earning him the lowest gross score.
Spalding lost a social match at Sutton Bridge GC last week being whitewashed 6-0 by their local rivals, who really used their home advantage in their favour.
The first round of the Lincolnshire Free Press Trophy competition which was decimated by heavy rain, thunder and lightning.
It will be played as an 18 hole competition in August, with all first round participants eligible.
Seniors: Ron Sudbury, John Newcombe and Howard Greaves saw off 30 other members to win the annual exchange day competition at Holme Hall GC on countback.
The 11 teams escaped the rain and enjoyed a close competition.
The winning trio racked up 80 points and won a dozen golf balls each.
Tony Holbrook, Les Mitchell and Derek Sands were second, with Dave McDermott, Mick Humphrey and Phil Thorold third on 76points.

Ladies' section: Dina Reedman excelled in the June Sunday medal, reducing her handicap by four to 25 after winning with a nett 68.
Having already qualified for the gold medal, that place went to Sue Matthews who returned the next best score.
Paula Brown took the silver category prize.
Vice-captain Jackie Bailey won the June stableford with 39 points and earned a handicap reduction to 15.
Pam Smith, also with 39 points, finished in second and saw her handicap fall to 23.
One shot back was Doreen Sands (38 points), who sees her handicap fall to 29.
Norma Parker (37 points) completed the leaderboard, earning a reduction to 16 herself.
Pat West and Dianne West performed well at English Closed Amateur Strokeplay Championships at Royal Ashdown Forest GC.The duo qualified for the final round after finishing well up in the top half of the field.
