FOOTBALL: Wakes not interested in ground share
BOURNE Town have moved to quash any rumours of a potential ground share with Spalding United.
With the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field currently the subject of a town centre development proposal, rumours are rife that the Tulips are looking for a temporary home next season.
Although Bourne’s Abbey Lawn home is not currently deemed up to standard for the UCL Premier Division, it was thought Spalding were considering it as a potential venue – and offer to improve the ground to boot.
But the Wakes’ secretary Bob Lambert insists his side would not consider any kind of ground share.
He said: “We’ve had no contact whatsoever with Spalding and wouldn’t entertain any such idea.
“The Abbey Lawn is home to our first team and Reserves and they are our priority.
“We’ve managed to keep the pitch in a virtually immaculate condition and wouldn’t welcome another side using it. I can categorically deny that any meeting has taken place and we wouldn’t welcome any contact from any club, be it via email, letter or phone.
“Even if any club wanted to pay for improvements, it’s just not possible to enclose the ground here.”
