FENCING: Theo (15) is regional foil champion

Theo Edwards (15), a member of Custodians Fencing Club in Spalding, achieved one of the best results of his career to date winning gold in the showpiece U17 Foil event at the East Midlands Youth Fencing Championships at Mansfield on Saturday.

He then quickly changed his kit, and weapons, to take part in the U17 Épée event, where he secured his second medal of the day, this time a bronze for joint third place.

Theo, who attends Bourne Grammar School, only started fencing last year, where he was initially trained by club coaches Andie and Tom Bayston to fight his first weapon of foil.

He added épée to his repertoire last December, joining the Oundle, Peterborough and Stamford (OPS) Épée club where he is coached by ex-Commonwealth fencing medalist Chris Howser.

Given some early success in the sport, Theo is also a member of the regional East Midlands Cadet Squad who train at Nottingham Trent University throughout the year.

Over the past 12 months Theo has fenced in the Leon Paul Junior Series, a national league type competition where his best four results provide his ranking.

With a month to go, Theo is ranked eighth in foil and second in Épée in the U15 age group.

He has competed in a number of adult competitions, most recently winning bronze in the Northamptonshire County Épée Championships, with gold and silver going to his two OPS Épée Club Coaches (both being commonwealth medalists).

Theo is now competing in the British Selection Circuit competitions at U17 and had a great result of 11th place in the Manchester Epee competition in September.
