EBF BOWLS: Five-star performances boost Castle's title bid
Spalding & District EBF Bowls League
FIVE seems to be the magic number for runaway Division Two leaders Castle A.
The Spalding side made it five wins on the spin to move 12 points clear in the title race - with all of the successes being by a 5-1 scoreline.
Long Sutton A were their most recent scalp - although they put up a pretty decent fight on Castle's immaculate green.
David Marriott, Brian Benton and Gordon West picked up a 27-14 triumph for the hosts, while Sutton trio R Cox, D Thorpe and H Marston snared a 24-10 return to bag Sutton's point.
BSC lost valuable ground on the leaders courtesy of a 5-1 reverse at Spalding Town B.
In what was a really close clash, Town took three rinks by narrow margins - with a 24-19 return from C Stagles, B Chatham and D Chatham tipping the aggregate spoils in their favour.
That defeat allowed Whaplode Drove A and Consti B to close right in on the second-placed side.
Drove are 1.5 points behind them in after winning their all-club affair with Whaplode B 5-1, with all four rinks chipping in with 20 shots or more.
Consti prevailed by the same score at Sutton Bridge A. B Borst, E White and S Buffery (21-10) top scored for the high-fliers.
Elsewhere, Moulton Harrox B romped to the biggest win of the week at this level.
They laid waste to Gosberton 5-1, racking up 112 shots in the process.
A phenomenal performance from G Pearson, J Taylor and JT Taylor stole the show, as the trio won 44-9.
In the top flight, Ayscoughfee A's lead at the summit has been cut to just 1.5 points.
The table toppers picked up a 4.5-1.5 success at Holbeach USC A, but saw rivals Carter's Park A plunder a maximum haul at home to Bourne Town A.
July Allen, J Wells and J Allen took Ayscoughfee's best rink (27-18), while L Dunham, Annalisa Bellamy and Scott Dunham bagged 30 points in the Holbeach side's 6-0 stroll.
Third-placed Spalding Town A fell 11.5 points off the pace as they came a cropper at Bicker.
J Butler, O Gedney and R Wing's 28-8 return was the pick of the rinks in a 4-2 home victory.
Meanwhile, Carter's Park C were dealt a crushing blow in the race for Division Three silverware. Swineshead - who still harbour title ambitions of their own - racked up a century of points as they crushed the second-placed side 6-0.
A hefty 33 of their 102 shots came from E May, D Armstrong and R Turner.
Leaders Carter's Park B took full advantage of the slip up. They prevailed 5-1 at Consti B, taking three of the rinks.
The best of those came from S Hammond, A Barker and T Crane (28-15).
At the foot, Long Sutton B recorded a welcome victory.
They beat Billingborough B 5-1 to register only a second win of the season - and they snared a century of shots in the process.
A fantastic 39 of the 100 came from M Walsh, P Clark and B Simpson.
In the bottom tier, Moulton Harrox C really enhanced their title credentials.
They thrashed Sutton Bridge C 6-0 (109-45) and boasted two rinks with a shot count of over 30.
The most emphatic of the pair was a 31-8 return from Julie Hicks, M Hains and G Hicks.
Holbeach USC B were also emphatic winners, as they defeated rivals Carter's Park D 5-1.
They were led home by an on-song L Whatley, Steve Whatley and B Fant (28-14).
