DARTS: Adams aiming to hit winning trail again

DECORATED Deeping darts ace Martin Adams is bidding to get back to winning ways at this week’s Scottish Open.

England captain “Wolfie” crashed out of the Dutch Open at the last 16 stage against Davyd Venken last Saturday, despite being among the favourites to land the crown.

Dutchman Venken, currently rated as world number 37 by the British Darts Organisation (BDO), pulled off a massive shock by ousting Adams en route to the quarter-finals of the tournament – which was won by Tony O’Shea.

After missing the chance to match Eric Bristow’s hat-trick of BDO World titles at the Lakeside in January, Adams had been aiming for another treble in Veldhoven before coming unstuck.

But while he was disappointed with the defeat, the three-time world champion remains pleased with his form so far this year.

He said: “It was probably not my best performance in Holland and obviously I was disappointed with the result but these things happen. There are so many throwers that enter the Dutch Open that there is always the risk you can come up against someone on fire.

“But I am pleased with the way I am playing and looking forward to the Scottish Open next weekend. Hopefully I can go up there, play well and put together some good results.”

The Scottish Open takes place this weekend at the Normandy Cosmopolitan Hotel in Renfrew. It is a venue that provided the backdrop for Adams’ sole Scottish Open win back in 2005.

No player has won the title twice, though.

• SHIRLEY Povey nailed a 180 as New Saracen’s Head kept their 100 per cent record alive in Spalding and District Ladies’ League Division One.

The top flight leaders made light work of bottom-of-the-table Bell B, winning 12-6 to make it 11 wins on the spin.

Povey’s maximum came in a 3-0 singles win over Jean Irwin. She also threw a 140.

Horse and Groom A are their nearest challengers, having seen off Elizabethan 10-8. They sit eight points off the pace.

Rita Tomizzi did manage a 140 for the Whaplode Drove side, but they slip back into the bottom two.

In Division Two, table toppers Lincoln Arms needed a 3-0 doubles win from E Spinks and M Hewitt to edge past hosts Punchbowl 10-8.

Doreen Hewitt top scored with 140 for the leaders – who are now four points ahead of Lamb and Flag.

That’s because the second-placed side lost 10-8 at Lake Ross. Jodi Ironmonger’s 3-0 triumph over Clare Holstead sealed the victory for the girls from Pode Hole.

It’s a bit closer at the top of Division Three, after leaders Tigers were held 9-9 by Jolly Farmer.

A last-gasp doubles win from Becky Goddard and Rachel Sherriff pegged the Holbeach side back – and allowed Drayman’s to close to within a point of the summit.

They beat Bell B 10-8, thanks largely to a 2-1 doubles victory from Jackie Holmes and Patsy Peppercorn.

• TRADEMARK 180s from big-hitting duo Duncan Hunt and Mark Horspool kept New Saracen’s Head C in the Spalding and District League Division One driving seat.

They beat Rose and Crown 7-2 in a game that also saw Pete Richardson complete a 15-dart leg.

Division Two leaders Jolly Farmer also turned on the style. Ben Warner and Hank Watson hit 180s in the 9-0 beating of Horse and Groom A.
