ATHLETICS: Pupils bring county glory in annual championships

A HOST of local athletes were included in the Lincolnshire team for the Annual Anglian Schools Track and Field Championships at Norwich.

At Senior level, Jake Mason prevailed in the high jump by clearing 1.96m yet again - and he narrowly missed out on 2m when he clipped the bar.

Sean Band won the hammer with a throw that measured at 42.90m, while Adam Smith went over 3.90m to win the Pole Vault and finished third in the discus (39.40m).

Meanwhile, Isabelle Whitehead (Spalding High) won the 400m hurdles (76.4secs) and the throwers were in excellent form.

Steph Hendy (Spalding High) won the hammer (38.72m), while Kelly Lawrence (Spalding Grammar) secured both the shot (8.74m) and discus (29.97m) for Lincolnshire.

Devon Spencer (Spalding High) claimed second in the senior girls long jump (4.40m), while and Sophie Hallam (Spalding High) was runner-up in both the pole vault (2.10m) and 100m hurdles (20.8secs).

Catherine Taylor (Spalding High) chalked up another track victory, as she romped home in the intermediate girls 3000 m (10.21.3mins).

Elsewhere, Jake Mason added a second in long jump (6.24m), while Jake Brittain vaulted 3.90m for additional second place points.

Intermediate Chelsea Brockett secured second in the pole vault (2.30m) and Melanie Bristow (Thomas Cowley) inched nearer the 30m mark in the javelin with a PB of 29.56m for the same position.

Nathan Wood (Cowleys) gained a valuable third place in the intermediate 3000m, with school mate Haden Brittain claiming third place in the hammer (47.44m).

Emily Moss smashed her PB again at the U/20s AAA's at Bedford this week.

The championships doubled as trials for the European U/20 and U/23 championships.

She qualified well from her 400m hurdles heat on Saturday, with a time very close to her PB (64.50secs) and drew lane two for the final.

All the big names were outside her and the event was one of the weekend's quality races.

Emily ran superbly and achieved fifth place in 63.35secs, leaving her in the top ten of the UK rankings.
