ATHLETICS: Sm-Ash-ing Sandall is Harriers’ golden boy

Two Nene Valley Harriers athletes came back from the regional indoor track and field championships with medals around their necks.

Leading the way was South Holland star Ashley Sandall, who won gold in the under-17 400m final at the Northern Championships in Sheffield with a personal best (PB) time of 51.43secs.

It’s Sandall’s first year in the under-17 group, but he was quickest in the heats and the semi-finals, setting indoor PBs in both races.

Next up for the pace ace is the Aviva Indoor National Championships at Birmingham next month.

Meanwhile, Nene Valley’s Emily Maltby was sixth in the under-20 ladies’ triple jump with a leap of 11.02m.

David Bush also attended the Northern Championships and recorded a time of 53.4secs in his 400m heat and 7.68secs in his 60m heat.

In the Southern Championships held at Lea Valley, Georgie Ivens took bronze in the senior ladies’ 400m with a time of 58.48s –her second fastest indoor time ever.

Daz Holding made the 400m semi-final, but eased off due to illness after realising he had failed to qualify running a time of 51.97 (51.58 in his heat).

Lloyd Kempson came fifth in the under-20 800m heat with a time of 2.02.11mins.
