Spalding Triathlon Club’s ‘ginger missile’ Sam Rose has once again defied the odds to complete his third Iron Man event.

Endurance athlete Rose made the trip to Lanzarote for his latest challenge, as he took on a gruelling 2.3 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run in the heat.

On a windy, but warm, Saturday, the Spalding ace took to the sea for the first leg of his daunting trio of disciplines – and completed his swim in 1.16.25hrs.

Next up for Rose was the bike leg, which took the competitors through mountainous terrain.

He complete the undulating course in 7.02.59hrs... but still had a marathon run to follow.

Amazingly, the ginger missile finished that in 4.23.20hrs to give himself a overall time of 13.02hrs, which included transition between each discipline.

A Spalding Tri spokesman said: “This type of event is a show of endurance and focus – and only the strongest of athletes complete it.

“Most of us would be happy to run a marathon or achieve the big 100 miles on a bike and at the end feel exhausted, but to the iron men and women this is only part of the event.”
