TABLE TENNIS: South Holland take a top double

SPALDING & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE (Sponsored by Magellan Solutions Ltd): SOUTH Holland secured a double as they added the Marylands Cup to their Division One crown.

They met league runners-up Defenders in the final of an event recently dominated by lower placed sides.

While Holland’s Richard Hammond and Adam Sokol got off to a quick start taking the first two games in straight ends, Defenders’ Alan Fear and Martyn Green fought back to take the doubles and the first of the return singles.

In the deciding singles Sokol held his game together and secured the victory.

Meanwhile, the Guardian Cup Final saw JAG’s Allan Lewis drop heavy points in their first game – and despite some fine play by team mate James Gibson, it was never going to be enough against Lone Sharks.

In the end, Sharks’ Adam and Keith Davey won over the table 120-99 and with the hidden handicap only producing 20 points for JAG it was not enough.

The final of the Roy Gibson between Joe Bombardini (starting on 20) and Dave Gilbert (17) went to three ends. Gilbert took the first 31-28, before being pegged back in the second 31-25. However, he managed to get back again to take the third 31-26 and the title.

The semi-final of the Veterans saw team mates Phil Chandler and Mark Willows battling it out to meet John Gilbert for the title.

Willows took the first, only for Chandler to go ahead with the next two, before Willows won the fourth. Eventually Chandler won a close tie 9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 12-14, 11-8.

That final and the Division One title will be played tomorrow. In the meantime the League has swung into full summer mode. Anyone wishing to try the sport is welcome to join in, with a fee for the evening £3 to help cover the League’s expenses.
