SWIMMING: Coup for Chloe after earning England call

CHLOE Hannam has been selected to swim for the England Central team in the UK School Games Championships at Sheffield this September.

It’s a fantastic achievement for the 14-year-old South Lincs Competitive Swimming Club ace, who will be racing in the 400m IM event.

On-song Hannam has also qualified for seven national swims to be held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield at the end of the month.

She will compete in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, the 200m and 400m IM, the 200m backstroke and the 200m butterfly.

Another swimmer competing at the nationals is 14-year-old Sophie Taylor, who will race in the 400m freestyle and the 100m backstroke.

• South Lincs have been busy competing in a variety of race meets over the past few weeks, which has included trips to Coventry, Colchester, Sheffield and more Whittlesey.

The Spalding-based club was represented by five swimmers at the Midlands Championships held in Coventry.

Both Ryan Horrocks (11) and Serena Leadbeater (10) competed in the 10/11 years age group, with the former finishing 26th, 25th and 23rd respectively in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle and coming 24th in the 200m IM.

Leadbeater secured an impressive eighth in the 100m and took 18th in the 200m back. Also in action was 13-year-old Harry Bumfrey, who raced to sixth in the 100m free and 18th in the 200m back.

Meanwhile, 11-year-old Matthew Gray managed 29th in the 400m.

A further 21 swimmers headed to Whittlesey for the annual Fenland meet.

Among the highlights was a brilliant win for nine-year-old Emily McCann in the nine and under 50m breaststroke in a time of 49.60s. McCann also achieved second place in the 50m freestyle (37.38secs) and fifth in the 50m back (47.20secs).

Another notable performance came from 11-year-old Luke Elliott, who gained third places in the 50m backs (38.48secs) and 50m butterfly (38.13 secs) and fourth places in the 50m breast (46.38secs) and 50m free (33.91secs).

Other Fenland meet results: Jamie Reeves (11) – 5th in 50m breast (46.45secs); Colin O’ Reilly (11) – 5th in 50m butterfly (41.22secs); Madden Wright (12) – 4th in 100m back (1.22.35mins); Natasha Berg (14) – 2nd in 100m freestyle (1.08.49mins) & 3rd in 100m butterfly (1.22.82mins); Amy Reeves (14) – 2nd in 100m breast (1.31.52mins) & 4th in 100m back (1.21.05mins); Sian Roberts (14) – 2nd in 100m back (1.18.48mins).

• TWELVE South Lincs members competed against swimmers from all over the country in the ‘No Frills’ meet at the 50m international pool at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

Chloe Hannam raced in eight events over the three day event and swam very well. In the 400 IM she came a fantastic second with a time 4.58.40mins.

She also gained further fourth place in the 400m freestyle (4.23.80mins) and 200m butterfly (2.22.80mins) which gave Hannam a National Qualifying Time in this event.

Matthew Gray (11) finished an excellent second in the 100m freestyle (1.13.10smins) and went on to take third in the 200m breast (3.33.50mins).

• ELEVEN swimmers travelled down to Colchester for the Phoenix ASC open distance meet.

Sophie Taylor gained excellent times in in the mixed 800m free and 1500m free in the S8 class.
