Spalding ladies first team claimed their opening league win of the season against fellow strugglers Bedford 2nd at Glen Park on Saturday.

They got off to a perfect start when Karen Timby smashed home a short corner after just three minutes.

The home side dominated the play and created chances to add to the scoreline before Jacqui Hunter found the net after 16 minutes.

Six minutes later Timby added a third from another short corner and Spalding were well on top.

However, Bedford fought back and made it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time.

In the first minute of the second half, Spalding were caught napping and Bedford made it 3-2.

The free running and passing of the first half went as Spalding were made to dig in and defend their lead.

Spalding bowed out of the Women’s Trophy to a strong Wisbech team on Sunday.

The first half was very even with play flowing from end to end and Kelly Slator came agonisingly close to opening the scoring following a great move.

However it was Wisbech who took the lead following a scrambled short corner after 25 minutes.

Spalding were still in the game as Amy Wells, Di Bevan and Ellie Pybus put the visiting defence under pressure.

A couple of fine saves by the Wisbech keeper denied Spalding and the home team conceded a second goal.

More great work from Wells set up Bevan to make it 2-1 with ten minutes left but Spalding could not equalise.

The men’s first team lost 2-0 at City of Peterborough 2nd with a man-of-the-match display from Josh Olphin in goal unable to prevent the defeat.

It was a wonderful weekend for Long Sutton with wins for all the men’s and ladies first and second teams.

The ladies recorded a 4-1 verdict over Newmarket thanks to goals from Leanne Woodhead, Lisa Baker and Lyn Tancred (2).

They opened up a four-goal advantage with the late consolation coming from Newmarket’s only short corner of the game.

The second team saw off Spilsby by the same scoreline courtesy of Emmie Gittins (2), Jenny Gittins and Jeorgia Carr.

The men’s first team won 3-1 at Harleston Magpies courtesy of a hat-trick by Josh Fyson.

The second team beat Cambridge City Veterans 5-1 with Ben Shore’s treble backed up by a double from Gary Hales.
