Spalding men’s first team moved within touching distance of second-placed Norwich City with a 2-1 home win.

They were keen to avenge their 8-2 away defeat in the first half of the season and did so with purpose.

Norwich took the lead through a short corner which was neatly deflected into the net at the far post.

Captain Josh Rowbottom rallied his troops, determined not to get let the team’s heads drop.

Eventually the breakthrough came as Spalding levelled through Michael Morris before half-time.

Spalding caught Norwich off guard and took a quick free hit which Dan Needham finished impressively to put them 2-1 up.

The game opened up for the remaining 15 minutes as Norwich pushed for the equaliser but they were left frustrated and lost their discipline with two sin bin offences.

Spalding felt the pressure as they went down to 10 men after Joe Higgins lost his temper.

Spalding host Norwich City again on Sunday (2pm) in the England Hockey Trophy third round looking for a place in the quarter-finals.

The ladies first team won 3-2 at Letchworth thanks to a hat-trick of penalty corners by Karen Timby, Kelly Slater and Di Bevan.

With points becoming ever more crucial, Long Sutton men’s first team were left with plenty to work to do following an 8-4 defeat at Saffron Walden.

They were 3-0 down after just 20 minutes but Josh Fyson pulled one back.

Danny Sisson made it 4-2 before Walden added two quick goals. Sisson scored again and then his reverse shot was deflected in by Gary Hales.
