For the second successive week, Spalding hosted a team fighting against relegation from Men’s Premier B and once again found their opposition wanting the win more.

Following the derby defeat at home to Long Sutton, they went down 4-1 to bottom-of-the-table Harleston Magpies 2nd at Glen Park on Saturday.

Spalding started brightly and created a number of chances in the opening period but were unable to make the most of them due to a combination of rushed finishing and some excellent work by the keeper who had just been dropped from the Magpies’ National League team.

Spalding took the lead on 20 minutes with a sensational touch from Glenn Richardson following a pinpoint through-ball by Stuart Cunnington.

But the Norfolk boys bounced back and scored an equaliser just before the break.

A sloppy start to the second half saw Spalding concede again but this inspired them to a spell which promised much.

They forced a series of short corners to no avail and found the net just after the whistle.

With the home side pushing forward in search of the equaliser, gaps appeared at the back which were well exploited by the visitors as they added two further goals in the closing stages.

Meanwhile, the second team went two points clear at the top of Division Four North West thanks to a 6-0 victory over City of Peterborough 7th.

Spalding started the game strongly and dominated possession with controlled quick interplay.

The game was played in Peterborough’s half as the home side probed their opponents and were rewarded when Darren Grooby squared for James Stone to poke home from close range.

Spalding continued to dominate and were further rewarded when the ball broke to Joe Rogers at the top of the D and his drag flicked effort was deftly deflected home by Tom Mayhew.

Spalding could have been a lot further ahead but for some brilliant goalkeeping.

The second half continued in the same manner with Spalding dominance and four further goals were added.

Firstly following some more slick passing the ball was squared for Mayhew to claim his second from close range.

Spalding then took total control as Rogers (2) and Daniel Adams sealed the win.
