ALFONSO Palumbo weighed in with the first century break of the new Spalding and District League season – but saw his Pyramid F side suffer a maiden Division One defeat.

The Bourne ace, who plays off an O28 handicap, pocketed exactly 100 against Pyramid A’s Norman Vaughan (O14).

It is the first ton to be scored in a top flight match since Jason Bates’ 106 in the 2007/08 campaign.

Unfortunately, Palumbo’s side were beaten 4-2, with Brian Kendall (O14), Stephen Davies (O7) and Eric Wyer (O7) earning the A team a 4-2 success – sending them up to second in the process.

It was a cracking week for breaks in Division One, as Long Sutton B’s Carl Parnell (O42) helped himself to super 76 in a 4-2 win at Crowland D.

Another Sutton star, Sean Swinburn (O42), scored a fine 68 in the A team’s 5-1 home reverse against Donington C.

Matt Smith (O49), Adam Barwell (O42) and Neil Reynolds (O49) all racked up scores of 32 in the same clash.

There was also a cracking 57 break from Crowland C maestro Rob Childs (O63) too, as his side dispatched Tulips A 5-1.

But it’s Donington A that lead the way, having stretched their 100 per cent start to three wins from as many games.

They defeated Holbeach A 4-2 last week, despite a 35 break from Jem Merrison (O35).

In Division Two, both Consti I and Holbeach D boast unbeaten starts. Consti were comfortable 5-1 winners at Pyramid C to edge one point clear, while Holbeach D edged out Gosberton A 4-2.

Elsewhere, Services B’s Ted Howling (O7) helped himself to the best break on offer in the second tier – but his 32 against Gosberton B couldn’t prevent his side going down 4-2 on their own baize.

Down in Division Three, Holbeach B’s sensational start continued with a 5-1 home triumph over Consti G. Only a black ball win from away player Marcus Drury (scr) denied the leaders maximum points.

Holbeach already lead by four points, having taken an impressive 16 points from an available 18.

Meanwhile, the top break at this level came from Jason Needham (O49).

The Bourne SC A potter amassed 44 against fellow club side Bourne SC C, but his side came unstuck 4-2.

Jason Rose (O7) was also on song last week. His 36 break was the highlight of Services C’s impeccable 6-0 whitewash of Consti E.

In Division Four, unbeaten Donington B went three points clear by beating Consti A 5-1. Dave Bannester (scr), Fred Goodacre (R21), Dennis Mitcham (scr) and Mick Clark (R7) were all on winning form for the leaders.

Also unbeaten are Long Sutton C, who enjoyed an eye-catching 5-1 win over a string Bourne SC B outfit.

Rachel Mayfield (R21) enjoyed a fine win over Bourne’s star man Jason Bates, while Dan Mayfield (O14) trousered a 23 break.

Whittlesey D are the only other undefeated side in the basement tier. They accounted for Pyramid E 5-1 to make it nine points from two games.
