Three members of Holbeach Weight Training Club have broken several long-standing records.

Lifts set by club legends Bruce McEwan, Eric Bird and Simon Taylor up to 34 years ago were shattered as a new generation of power lifters created records for bench press, deadlift and overall total.

The first of the three disciplines in powerlifting saw Craig Candler and Will Chenery achieve 440lbs in the squat lift. Excellent lifts but existing records stayed intact.

On the bench press, Tom Chenery (82.5k) set a new club record for his weight category with 315lbs and then pushed it even higher on his third and final attempt by successfully pressing 330lbs.

Brother Will (100k) broke a relatively recent (1994) record held by Julian Welch when he pressed 395lbs. For his third attempt he bravely tried 420lbs but such an increase found him wanting and he failed the lift.

Finally, in the deadlift, Will set another club record with 572.5lbs, formerly held by Bruce McEwan since 1979.

With the bar then loaded with an incredible 600lbs, Craig Candler smashed yet another record in the 125k class.

When totals from all three disciplines were added, the results showed that Will had created yet another new club record in his weight class with a combined total of 1407.5lbs.

Judges were Robin Perry, Eric Bird and Simon Taylor.
