More than 50 visitors turned up for Welland Yacht Club’s Open Day.
The day was held in perfect weather as visitors were given the opportunity to try sailing for the first time.
Existing members helmed a number of two-man sailing dinghies and took those wanting to sail for a 10 to 15-minute sail up and down the river from the club’s premises off Cradge Bank.
Some visitors had a go at helming, while others were content to sit in the front and control the small jib sail.
Several visitors filled in application forms to join the club, with many expressing a keen wish to receive formal training from the club’s RYA-approved instructors – either in dinghy sailing or for power boat instruction.
Most of the visitors had never sailed before, while some needed a local facility to rekindle their love for the sport.
The club has organised sailing events every Sunday, between 11am and 4pm from April to November, and run a junior club from 9.30-11 am on most Sunday mornings.
The clubhouse boasts newly refurbished men’s and women’s changing rooms, thanks to an Inspired Facilities Grant from Sport England and also boasts a kitchen, bar and a secure boat compound for members’ boats.
