Long Sutton U12 finished their season in grand style by finishing in second place in the Friendly League.

Ed Lanning, in his last match at this age group, collected the runners-up plate, which means Sutton’s U12s have brought home silverware for the third consecutive year.

There was plenty to be proud about at a windy Skegness as they managed to field a second team for the first time this season.

Elite group players Charlotte Maplethorpe, William Taylor and Kieron Smith guided a team made up with debutants to equal second spot in the B Group – William impressing once again with a fantastic work rate and two splendid breakaway goals.

Josh Ripley, Alfie Ransome and Patrick Walsh slotted in well in their first games in a Sutton shirt and new keeper Brad looked to be a born star, with some great clearing kicks.

The Green team in the elite group were focused and clinical, with four wins, a goalless draw and a solitary one-nil defeat to eventual champions Lincoln.

That was the only goal James Cudlipp conceded, and, although Ed Lanning and Tom Burton’s expert defending gave him an easy ride on this occasion, as he moves up an age group, he can be well pleased with the commitment he has shown to the team over the years.

Josh Baker, Macy Carr, Matt Goodley and Jacob Synnott will all still qualify for the U12s next season and they will strike fear into the hearts of any opposition.

There was plenty of good passing hockey, combined with great individual skill: Josh the arch-opportunist looking to shoot first time, Ed clean striking short corners, and Matt impressing with a great reverse stick finish and another mazy run and pass for a Jacob tap-in.

Thanks to Edmund for all his help, to parents for their time and support, to Andy Barlow for running the league programme and especially John Sullivan, for supplying the energy and drive the kids deserve.

Greens: James Cudlipp, Edward Lanning, Jacob Synnott, Macy Carr, Matt Goodley, Josh Baker, Tom Burton.
