Ollie Mitchell and Mark Dodds won an exciting final in Spalding Golf Club’s men’s Stewards Cup.

The winter league competition began back in November with close to 50 pairs and was eventually settled in a play-off at the end of a high quality finale.

The final produced numerous birdies but it was Mitchell (2 handicap) and Dodds (8) who saw off the challenge of Darrel Cross (14) and Stuart Armstrong (15).

Mitchell and Dodds were one up at the turn and they extended their advantage after winning the 11th hole.

They held the lead until Cross won both the 16th and 17th to square the match, and with pars at the last from both Mitchell and Dodds it was Armstrong who holed a five foot putt on the last to force a sudden death play-off.

After halving the first extra hole, Dodds hit a superb approach shot to six feet from the flag at the next hole and then converted for a birdie to clinch the much-coveted trophy.

The losing semi-finalists were Rob and Hugo Kedzlie plus Mal Wray and Malcolm George.
