Long Sutton ladies first team produced a fantastic performance to pick up a point at home to second-placed Cambridge University 2nd.

They have only lost once at the Peele School since the first game of the season.

Sutton found form going into this game which started at a high tempo.

Lou Southgate, Louise Billingham, Jo Bland and Leah Goodley worked tirelessly in the midfield to support the defensive four and feed into the forward line of Lisa Baker and Lyn Tancred.

Despite Sutton’s best efforts and putting everything on the line to defend, the university girls found a breakthrough in the 15th minute.

However some outstanding defending from Katie Bedford, Gemma Parr, Tania White and Jess Hudson meant they were held only to one goal before half-time.

After a team talk and a couple of changes, Sutton got more into the game with a few chances falling to Leanne Woodhead and Tancred.

Player of the match Baker had her best game of the season, showing versatility and ability in several positions, along with last-ditch tackling and constant pressure.

With about 15 minutes remaining Sutton found a way back with a goal from Woodhead and Lorraine Wallis’ saves ensured it remained 1-1 for a deserved point.

The men’s first team lost 5-2 at Waltham Forest.

The opening goal came 10 minutes in when an aerial ball from Josh Fyson found its way over the heads of the opposition into the path of Fred Whatling’s well-timed run. Whatling then linked up with Ben Shore and Danny Sisson put Sutton 1-0 up.

The lead didn’t last long with Waltham equalising from a short corner, taking the lead from a penalty and then going 4-1 up before half-time.

The second half was a more even affair with Sutton keeping and moving the ball well, but to no avail.

Sisson doubled his tally but Sutton were unable to convert any more chances into short corners or goals until Waltham added a fifth.

Meanwhile, Spalding men’s first team went down 4-3 at champions Letchworth.

They made the trip with several regulars unavailable but third-team keeper Ian Cesar and youngster Tom Mayhew both did themselves proud.

Spalding had no pressure and went out to enjoy themselves with a brilliant first-half performance.

They created space out wide and exploited this well, going 1-0 up after Stuart Cunnington’s short corner.

Letchworth levelled before half-time and then raced into a 4-1 lead.

Spalding fought back and took advantage of Letchworth’s ill-discipline when they went down to nine players.

Joe Rogers pulled one back and Cunnington made it 4-3 with a powerful flick.

Spalding pushed for a point but Letchworth ran down the clock.

Spalding ladies suffered a 3-2 home defeat to City of Peterborough who scored three times before the break.

Spalding started the second half strongly and pulled a goal back from a well-struck short corner by Karen Timby.

Confidence grew and Timby added a second but the fightback was not quite enough for a point.
