INDOOR BOWLS: Spalding hit by late March

SPALDING Indoor Bowls Club’s friendly bowlers were edged out by March on Sunday in a clash that went right down to the wire.

For the first half of the match both teams were evenly matched, before hosts Spalding pulled away and gained a substantial 20 shot lead at the halfway stage.

March refused to give up and clawed back the deficit to set up a tense finish, eventually clinching it in the final end by two shots.

Spalding’s most successful rink on the day was David Smith, Ray Bothamley and Lily Drawbridge, while Geoff Craft was captain for the day.

• Spalding men’s ‘B’ team pipped rivals Long Sutton 95-92 on their own green on Sunday.

It was an extremely close game throughout, with only a few shots ever separating the teams. Spalding’s main contributors were L Jackson, G Pearson, B Benton and J Taylor, who recorded a winning score of 24-14.

Captain for the day was R Walpole.

• Spalding’s mixed team saw off hosts Boston in their latest Division One match.

They were in control throughout and won by 106 shots to 87, with the best rink coming from Pat Crampton, Len Jackson, Barbara Hurst and Brian Benton.
