Lightning unfortunately struck twice for Spalding’s Indoor Bowls Under-25 side as they lost a dramatic final of the David Cornwell double rink national competition.
Spalding were hoping for revenge on opponents Torquay, having lost to them by one shot in last year’s final.
But they went down by two shots this time around, leaving the team heartbroken.
The rink draw was the same as last year, with Charlie Leuty, Jordan Philpott, Ash Caress and Calvin Leuty drawn against Louis Ridout.
Ryan Huskisson, Martin Duncan, Matt Whyers and Martin Spencer were pitched against Sam Tolchard.
Spencer’s rink played excellent bowls all day and maintained a lead throughout the match. Leuty’s set found their opponents on top form and they fell behind early on.
Ridout eventually led his set to a 21-12 win, which left Spencer’s set needing four shots on the last. Despite holding the four-shot required, Torquay played the Spalding’s bowls out of the end to claim victory. Spencer finished with a 22-15 victory, resulting in a final match score of 36-34.
It was a particularly frustrating finale for Spalding as time ran out before Spencer’s set could play their last end.
