The inaugural Spalding Invitation Cup, organised by Joe Beadle on behalf of Spalding Table Tennis League, proved a success and is now intended to be an annual event.

The tournament, held at Castle Sports, saw four teams – Spalding, Grantham, Ely and Chesterfield – playing a round-robin format with the two leading teams progessing through to the final.

Chesterfield came out on top with a 6-0 win over Ely in the final with Spalding drawing two and losing their other two matches.

Polish ace Tomascz Dobrzyn was the pick of the Spalding performers with four wins from his six matches while 55-year-old John Gilbert recorded three wins.

Richard Hammond managed one win while Jean White, the 2009 European Over 70 singles champion and one half of the 2011 European Over 70 doubles winners, proved she is still going strong at the age of 78 with two wins.
