The 2014 cyclo cross season is now under way for members
of Spalding Cycling Club, and at the same time late season
time trials are still being
contested along with Go Ride, Saturday club runs and weekday evening training sessions.

The first round of the Lincs Cyclo Cross League hosted by Sleaford Wheelers at Ancaster
had 19 Spalding members competing.

The under-12s race had a field of over 40 riders and
featured a strong ride to third place overall from in-form Bryn Richards while Molly Peel’s ninth overall secured her podium place as first girl and Emily Richards took
second girl in 11th overall.

Ben Norton finished with sixth place and Ed Gurney completed his race in 19th.

A field of 21 in the youths category race included nine Spalding members and fine rides from Matt Ellis and
Jake Norton netted fourth and sixth overall with Jake first-placed U14.

Their Sherwood Pines RT team-mate Harry Lewis took the top honours.

A neat demonstration of team riding had Will Gurney leading home Cameron Neilson, Tilley Gurney, Thomas Wright and Thomas Webster
filling places 12 to 16 with
Megan Kendall and Sophie Wright just off the pace in 18th and 21st places.

Tilly and Megan took the second and third-placed
Under-16 Girl awards behind Isabell Darvill of VC Lincoln.

The Senior race, won by Rapha Condor JLT professional Graham Briggs – a regular at Lincs League events – had 99 finishers.

Shane Norton was Spalding’s best placed rider in 48th and 13th in the vets category.

Second and third club members to finish were Tom Webster 64th place earning him ninth in the Vet 50 category and Gareth Richards with 72nd place overall and 17th place in the vet category.

Simon Wright and Chris Peel made up the rest of the Spalding team completing the course in 82nd and 20th Vet and 85th and 21st Vet respectively. All results were taken from VELOUK website.

The same weekend six members of the club were at the LRR A 30-mile time trial hosted by Boston Wheelers as Sharon Fensom and Nicky
Ellis took care of the time-keeping while four rode the event.

Due to traffic problems the race was shortened to 23½ miles and of the 59 finishers it was Jim Boyle of Cherry
Valley Wheelers who posted the fastest time of 52:09.

First Spalding rider home was Sam Bentley taking 32nd spot and just missed getting inside the hour with 1:00:29. It is not known if this was the winning U18 time.

Continuing their fine 2014 season Simon Wright’s 1:01:07 got him 33rd place and Barry
Drew was 51st in 1:06:00.
Sarah Bentley rode a great race finishing 54th in an actual time of 1:08:16 and taking first place on handicap with 44:26.
