SPALDING Hockey Club celebrated their annual club day on Saturday with a festival followed by a presentation evening at the South Holland Centre.
The club’s junior leaders organised a tournament in the morning, which was attended by around 60 young players.
Following the tournament, the leaders, who had taken part in the junior leadership course last summer – which was generously sponsored by the Wells Sports Foundation – were presented with their certificates by Michael Morris, head of junior coaching.
Adult members then enjoyed inter-club games through the afternoon.
In the evening, a club record of over 150 members and friends attended the awards night.
The most sought-after award, the Clubman of the Year, went to a very popular winner in Tom Shinkins for his joint role of men’s 3rd team captain and head of the club’s social committee.
Most improved female award went to Aby Henderson and the most improved male award to Will O’Donovan.
Goal-machine Kate Wooley added the highest scorer award to her collection, before each team elected their players’ player of the season.
• After a productive annual meeting, experienced campaigner Matt Sanders has taken charge of the men’s first team for next season as they bid to bounce back, while the senior figure of Mark Smith-Hughes will be leading the men’s second string.
The trio of Tom Shinkins, Matthew Thorley and Adrian Bettinson will be in charge of the men’s third, fourth and fifth teams respectively.
Sally Pilgrim and Steph Wilson have taken over in charge of the Poachers’ first team as they aims to return to East League hockey.
Abby Cook and Alison Harrison-Wild will lead the highly successful second team, while Frances Dalton and Karen Barkworth are anticipating great things from their rapidly developing third team.
• Spalding’s Saturday morning coaching sessions (9.30-11am) for boys and girls aged five-15 will resume on May 7 and run through to June 4. On Sunday, May 8 the club will be hosting the finals of the Lincolnshire U/12 and U/14 leagues at Glen Park, Surfleet.
