Spalding Hockey Club Ladies 1st made a valiant effort to retain the Lincolnshire County Championships title on Saturday, but Long Sutton are the new winners.
Spalding started with a 4-0 victory over Rutland and a 6-0 win over Spilsby. They continued in the same form against Alford with a 2-0 win.
Their run of clean sheets continued against Lincoln Roses but they dropped their first points of the day with a 0-0 draw.
Spalding then saw off Louth 2-0 and needed to beat Sutton to guarantee the title.
Despite playing in a lower domestic league, Spalding held their own and looked the more likely to win. They maintained strong possession and led twice before being pulled back to a 2-2 draw.
Spalding’s hopes rested on the result of the game between Lincoln Roses and Long Sutton, which ended with a 2-0 victory for Sutton.
Spalding were disappointed with their runner-up position, but can take many positives forward into the league season. Their top scorer was Jacqui Hunter.
