Leanne Woodhead fired the only goal to keep Long Sutton Ladies’ 1st in the East Women’s Hockey League Division 2NW title mix on Saturday.

Sutton sunk visitors City of Peterborough Ladies’ 2nd 1-0 at the Peele Leisure Centre to stay second in the table, seven points behind leaders Letchworth 1st.

After a disjointed first period, Woodhead slotted home the sole goal of the afternoon from a well-worked short corner, with Sutton’s effort and determination seeing them home.

Sally Cade and Tania White shared the player of the match award.

In the same division, Spalding Poachers 1st saw their run of losses continue with a 2-1 home defeat against Royston Ladies 1st.

Poachers went ahead when Kelly Tuplin crossed for Kelly Slater to slot home. Despite a top show from player-of-the-match Rachel Perkins, Royston broke away twice to net twice in the second period.

There was some relief for Spalding’s top ladies’ side 24 hours later, however. They won 2-0 at Alford 1st in a rearranged league clash.

Captain Sally Pilgrim opened the scoring after a neat exchange with Roz Dennis, before Tuplin sealed the points before the break.

Down a step in Division 3NW, Spalding Poachers 2nd drew 1-1 with City of Peterborough Ladies’ 3rd.

Despite creating a host of chances, Poachers found themselves 1-0 down at the break.

Player-of-the-match Christina Dewing wasn’t going to be beaten again, though, as Spalding pegged their city rivals back through an Elaine Allen strike.

Meanwhile, Spalding Poachers 3rd slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Louth Ladies’ 2nd in Division 4NW (N).

Samantha Maltby and Kelly Varley didn’t deserve to be on the losing side after producing superb showings.
