HOCKEY: Juniors set for a return to action

SPALDING Hockey Club’s junior coaching sessions resume this weekend after an extended winter break.

The sessions, which are for boys and girls aged from five to 15, take place at the club’s base at Glen Park from 9.30-11am on Saturday mornings.

The cost is £2.50 per session – but Spalding are offering a special price of £25 for the 15 sessions up to Easter.

The club has junior teams performing well in the Lincolnshire League at both under-12 and U/14 age groups, while at U/16 level, both boys and girls teams are still involved in National Cup competitions.

In addition, friendly hockey at U/9, U/11 and U/14 age groups is available for all players in local tournaments.

Newcomers of all abilities are welcome to join the regular junior members.

•CLOSE to 30 potential umpires from Spalding Hockey Club and other local teams were put through the theory side of England Hockey’s Level 1 Senior Umpiring Course in December.

Paul Watts of the Lincolnshire Hockey Umpires Association was delighted with the turnout – which in time will boost the number of qualified umpires and ease the burden on those currently umpiring in the local hockey leagues.

The candidates all passed the theory part of the qualification and now must be assessed while umpiring matches before qualifying for their Level 1 badge.

Spalding HC would like to thank the Wells Sports Foundation for their grant towards the cost of staging this course.

This is the second part of a project between Spalding and the Wells Sports Foundation, with generous financial assistance also being received for the Junior Leadership Course held last year.

•SPALDING return to outdoor training this week after and extended Christmas break.

The men’s first and second teams and the ladies’ Cambs and Lincs League teams train on a Tuesday evening (7-8.30 pm).

Meanwhile the ladies’ first, men’s 3rd, 4th and 5th will all train on Wednesday evenings 7-8.30pm.

Outdoor sessions are held on the all-weather pitch at Glen Park, Surfleet and new members are welcome.
