SPALDING Golf Club lifted the Harold Ireland Trophy after securing victory in their oldest social fixture.

First played in 1949 against Woodhall Spa GC, it the two teams contested the title for the 124th time, with the Surfleet course playing host.

Home advantage proved crucial for Spalding, who roared to an emphatic 6-2 success.

Winning pairs for the hosts were Bob Pearson and Max Ellis (6&4), Alan Singer and Geoff Clubley (6&4), John Crampton and John Stanford (5&3), Terry Carter and Rob Teeuw (4&3), Bob Sutton and Andy Reedman (3&1) and Sandy Watson and David Inglis (3&2).

• Two of Spalding’s top scratch sides were soundly beaten in their South Lincs League fixtures against Belton Park.

The men’s first team went down 4-1 with one game halved. Playing at the Grantham course, their only winners were James Crampton and Mark Mitchell (2&1), with Andy Grimwood and Dan Hines halving their game.

Playing on home soil at Surfleet, the second team suffered the same fate against Belton Park’s second string.

Their only win coming from Carl Reedman and Graham Hutchings (3&2) with the half coming from Robert Kedzlie and Wayne Wallace.

• A social match against King’s Lynn GC resulted in a 3.5-2.5 success for Spalding at the tree-lined Lynn course.

The winning pairs for Spalding were Paul Johnson and Alan Roper (4&3, including six birdies), Peter Gooderson and Stewart Sharp (3&2) and Andy Reedman and Bob Pearson (2up), with Bill Creasey and Sandy Watson halving their game.

• The third team won their latest social match 3-2 at home to Stoke Rochford GC, with one game halved.

Winning pairs were Robin Roffe and Peter Jullien (5&3), Simon Rothwell and David Bergmann (4&2) and Nick Edwards and Cliff Harrison 3&2.

Team captain Kevin Siddle and his vice Paul Wilton came back to halve their game having being four down after ten holes.

Ladies’ section: An impressive 49 ladies contested the popular Hills Day, sponsored by David Turner of Hills of Spalding, which was run in conjunction with the May medal.

Carle Holland returned the best score of the day with a nett 68 and qualified for the gold medal, reducing her handicap by three to 25 in the process.

In second place in the 21-28 handicap category was Olive Gooderson with a nett 74, ahead of Ann Tasker (nett 75) in third.

Noreen Tointon was the winner in the 30-36 category with a nett 72, cutting her handicap from 32 to 31.

Second place was awarded to Debra Ward (nett 76) ahead of Jackie Bailey-Scott with the same score.

In the silver category of 0-20, Dianne Platt took top honours with a 74, with Jean White (nett 75) in second and Paula Brown (nett 75) third.

• Spalding Ladies’ B league team got their season underway with a 2.5-1.5 win at home to Greetham Valley.

Result: Gerry Barnett & Norma Parker lost 2&1; Ruth Atkins & Anita Cross won 3&1; Avril Norton & Anne Ellis halved; Barbara Newcombe & Mo Wallace won 4&3.

• Jackie Bailey Scott scored 24 points to win the nine hole mixed Stableford competition and cut her handicap by three shots to 33.

• In windy and partly rainy conditions Elizabeth Holbrook and Janet Earth won the Hardy Cup, a better-ball 3/4 handicap competition, with 40 points.

Runners-up were decided on countback with Paula Brown and Anne Ellis finishing ahead of Elaine Macleman and Wendy Revill.

• The May Sunday medal, played in very strong winds, was won by Sue Matthews with an excellent nett 75. She now qualifies for the gold medal.

Paula Brown and Jean White returned nett 77s, while Sue Watson was the bronze category winner with a nett 78. Watson also earned herself a handicap reduction of one to 20.

Tydd St Giles GC

SENIOR captain Brian Shales was delighted to launch the club’s first Rabbits Cup open last week.

For players with handicaps between 21-28 and played in a Stableford format, the event was well supported by both members and visitors.

Marham duo G Thomas (42 points) and R Brooke (39 points) were the top two, with Tydd’s R Martin taking third place.
